Our Impact

Our high quality, policy-relevant research is used by both the media and policymakers to inform the debate, provide alternative solutions and improve understanding around the economic and social issues which most affect people’s lives.

The importance of NIESR in the public debate was exemplified by the work we carried out in the run up to this year’s General Election. With funding from the Nuffield Foundation, we produced briefing notes on the macroeconomic context faced by the new government and what we believed should be their key priorities. We also produced more specific briefings on productivitylevelling upliving standardsclimate and green transition policiespublic finances and tax options and local authority finance. Our findings received widespread media coverage and helped inform the election debate. But, importantly, none of this would have been possible without the backing of the serious and independent economic and social research described in this 2023/24 report.
